Orde Charles Wingate (b. Feb. 26, 1903, India-d. March 24, 1944, India), Major-General in the British Army, received his gunnery officer's commission in 1923. He saw action in the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, and during the Second World War in the East African campaign and the Burma campaign. He was an early ardent supporter of Zionism. Charles I. DeBevoise (b. Brooklyn, New York-d. Dec. 10, 1958, Glen Cove, N.Y.), U.S. Army officer, began his military career in the National Guard in 1895. He served in France during World War I as commander (then a colonel) of the 107th Infantry which was attached to the 66th British Division of General Byng's Third Army. George Windle Read (b. Nov. 19, 1860, Indianola, Ia.-d. Nov. 6, 1934) graduated from the U.S. military academy at West Point in 1883 where he received his commission as 2nd lieutenant in the 16th Infantry. He advanced to the rank of major general on Mar. 8, 1921 after having commanded the 2nd Army Corps from June 13, 1918, until demobilization on February 1, 1919.
